A small spinning top made by myself  out of solid steel, inspired from the movie with  Leonardo Di Caprio  "Inception".

If it spins indefinitely, we are in a dream, if ends up stopping, then it is real life....

FB

A small video where you can see it spinning for 2 minutes :

About the method for building it, unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures, but roughly speaking,, it is step turned to a shape closed to the profile you want, then semi-finished with a half round file, then finished with emeri grit clothe, from grain 120 to 600.

My Viola finished "in the white" - 16/05/2016 : 20:15 by Buxus

My viola "Charles IX" has quite progressed, it is finished "in the white", that is to say it is temporarily mounted and playable. Still left is the varnish  (which may last several weeks)

And thanks to my friend Jimo, you can even appreciate its voice :

Reamer and Breton bombard - 27/03/2016 : 22:54 by Buxus

FBFBFB

Here are a couple of videos concerning a long lead time project of making conical bore wind instruments.

The main difficulty is actually to make the reamer, which must of course be custom made. I started this project a couple of years ago, working at it sparingly, and I ended up by obtaining a reamer that works pretty well.

The first video shows the reaming of a piece of cherry wood on the lathe:  (a leftover of my previous bed project  smile )

At last, thanks to a rainy Easter week-end, I finished a very simple model of B flat Breton bombard, keyless, that allowed me to setup the placement of the the tone holes.

The sound is interresting, it is much more vibrating than compared to an ebony made bombard for instance, because the cherry wood is much lighter. I am pleased with it, and additionaly, it jumps quite easilly to the upper octave (which is not often the case with most of the bombards).

As demanded several times, here is working plan from a maker called "Jean Capitaine", located in Bourbriac, departement of Cotes du Nord, in the 70s/80s. This maker made a lot of binious and bombards for lots of musicians of the Tregor area and beyond.

A charging egg for smartphone - 27/10/2015 : 13:46 by Buxus

A new version of smartphone charging station, after the charging egg, here is the charging pot !

It is actually a small wood-turned pot, turned out of apple tree wood. It is then cut so that the smartphone can be supported and stand vertical in it.
The micro-usb cable is inlayed in a transversal dowel that goes through the pot from side to side.

This is just a proof of concept, next time I will do it with a dowel from the same wood.

The finish is oiled.

What to do with an orphaned earring ? - 13/09/2015 : 19:19 by Buxus

What to do with an orphaned earring ?

Definitively, do not get rid of it, that's a great opportunity for decorating a new object and to make it come back to life !

Even better, you will be looking at it more often than when it was hanging at your ear.

Here is an example of two pens that I have made in order to give life again to two earrings that happened to be lonely.

The very last, I made it for a friend of mine who asked me to do something with her single earring. It is a Bic pen, wood turned out of Indian rosewood.

The small "inkwell" that serves as a stand for it is made of briar burl.

The finish is a home brewed friction polish, shellac based, and the pot is finished with carnauba wax applied on a cellulose based pore filler.

FB

And here is another pen, older :

It is made out of mahogany, teak, ebony, abalone pearl, and an orphaned earring.

Note that in this case, beyond the pure aesthetic aspect, the earring brings a more functional touch, preventing the pen from rolling off the table.

You can see these pens in the galery : "Woodworking/My Woodturnings"/"Pen".

Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any detail on the making of these pens.

CharlesIX Viola, the scroll - 20/07/2015 : 08:37 by Buxus

I have re-started the work on the "Charles IX" viola project.

The back, top and sides are finished, I am currently carving the neck and here are a few pics at the end of the carving of the scroll :

I must precise that so far, no sand paper has been used, all cleaning up done with sharp scrapers.
