A new creation, unusual, I hope…
Is this a bagpipe?
Bagpipe or ...
No ! It’s a pepper mill! It’s a little nod to the work of @Raph jeannin which I greatly admire, in particular his wonderful bagpipes engraved with ‘Sautivet’ designs.
I was inspired by one of his models, taken from the famous Berry pipe-maker Jean Sautivet who created these engraved patterns in the 19th century. The body is in cherry, the rings in Macassar ebony, the button in ebony and mother-of-pearl.

A new wooden CNC Pendant It’s actually a second version, I have been working with a temporary prototype for a while and here is the final version.
This is used to send motion commands to the CNC controller software, it actually is a USB keyboard, and it sends key strokes to the software, which needs to be configured accordingly to trigger the desired moves.
The heart of the thing is an Arduino Pro micro (which does include an USB controller, providing the keyboard/mouse emulation capability).

Parallel jaws vise for the woodworking workbench When you have a wood vise such as this one: Parallel jaws bench vise.
And if you want to clamp a small part only on one side, you stress the slides asymmetrically causing a torsion of the mobile jaw. The part is not hold very tight and this is harmful for the vise itself.
Spacer Here is a simple remedy to this problem, it is a small spacer to keep on hand, made up of a stack of plywood shims of different thicknesses, pinned on longer dowel.

Frame saw or bow saw Here is a great classic that deserves to be brought up to date: the frame saw.
It has been in use for centuries in cabinet-making workshops and it has become a little rarer since the democratization of more specific saws for joinery such as tenons or dovetails or even by the band saw.
This saw is actually very versatile: you can use it for tenoning or dovetailing, also to cut wood to length or even to re-saw and cut wood along the grain.

Safety switch for home made machines No, this is not a bird nest for the garden !
This is a very simple (who said crude ?) but efficient mechanism which provide safety for starting and stopping any shop build machine.
Here, this is a router table.
The principle is to use a standard rocker switch (16A) and to build a sort of cage around it, with a swivelling cover that falls down by gravity.

Router lift mechanism Often Router lift mechanisms are quite complicated using slides and or gears.
This simple and efficient mechanism is making use of bicycle brake cables.
That great idea comes from Cosmas Bauer : https://youtu.be/r--HR6PZ6sw
In my particular case, it’s capable of lifting a very heavy router (more than 15Kg) + its springs, with no issue at all.

It is an automatic watch: it runs without batteries, it is not powered up, it works with the energy accumulated by the movements of the arm.
I made a bracelet giving free rein to my imagination, based on leather, gears, a key, clock needle and brass plates hand engraved by myself.

Edge Burnisher The burnisher is a necessary tool for finishing edges in leather work. There are many videos on the Net showing this operation, I show you here how you can make three different versions of this tool if you have access to a lathe.
Manual burnisher This first version is very simple, it is used by hand rubbing back and forth, quickly enough, so as to heat-up the edge and the resin or wax that covers it.

Saddle Stitching Clamp The Saddle Stitching Clamp is a handy tool for sewing leather by hand, especially for the saddle stitch.
It allows to hold the workpiece in an ideal position, tightening the piece as close as possible to the work area. Pieces can be of any size.
No screws or nuts are used for tightening, because it is the strength of the legs that operates, without any particular effort to provide.

Diamond shaped saddle stitching awls The awl is an important tool in the art of leather craft, it allows to punch a hole in order to pass the needles for saddle stitching.
There are two types of awls:
- the round awl, with a round and conical section blade. They are used to open or enlarge an existing hole.
- Diamond awls, which cut the leather rather than pierce it. The hole obtained is actually a slit, which allows to obtain angled stitches in saddle stitching.

Making a bone ring Bone is an economical and sustainable alternative to ivory, which there is no question of using any longer nowadays.
We can make mounts for musical instruments, but also very beautiful jewels.
The bone I use is beef bone that my butcher friend provides me. It is shin bone, where it is the thickest.
The preparation consists essentially of splitting the bone in half with a hacksaw and boiling it for a long time, at least 2 hours.

Long holes boring The making of woodwind instruments implies to be able to bore, from one end to the other, a piece of wood, usually very hard, of small diameter and of great length.
The bore is actually a first roughing step, which will be followed by a finishing step using a tool called a reamer. (See this other article about tapered reamers. )
The bore may be simply cylindrical or, in the case of a conical bore, roughed out by step drilling.

Tapered reamers In the field of woodwind instrument making, one thing is particularly challenging for many amateur luthiers, I want to talk about the bore.
The bore is the inner part of the instrument, it will determine the acoustic characteristics of the instrument.
Boring the instrument therefore represents a difficult challenge for the amateur and this requires a certain amount of know-how and tooling.
In wind instruments, we can distinguish two big families:

Breton flute. Here is a whistle, or rather a diatonic recorder of a style deliberately more Breton than Irish.
It is intended for the repertoire of the bombard and differs from the Irish flute by the presence of a subtonic hole, just like the key of the bombard.
The flute is also quite powerful and stable in the low register, which also corresponds well to the range of the bombard.

A small video where you can see it spinning for 2 minutes :
About the method for building it, unfortunately, I didn’t take any pictures, but roughly speaking,, it is step turned to a shape closed to the profile you want, then semi-finished with a half round file, then finished with emeri grit clothe, from grain 120 to 600.

Titanium / Wood Rings I have long-sought to improve my solid wood rings, which are still fragile in certain species and if they are made thin. The idea of lining them with metal is attractive, but it is necessary to find a resistant enough metal that is well supported in contact with skin.
The ideal solution is to use titanium.
Titanium is lightweight, strong, perfectly hypoallergenic, and resist all kind of corrosion.

The main difficulty is actually to make the reamer, which must of course be custom made. I started this project a couple of years ago, working at it sparingly, and I ended up by obtaining a reamer that works pretty well.

Two main possibilities exist to manufacture moldings:
You can work with a power shaper, making your irons on purpose. I personnaly do not own this machine and I am not really attracted to this kind of machine. You can also choose the hand work, and in this case there are also two possibilities : you can use a molding plane.

[![](https://www.woodworkersguide.com/guidebase/wp- content/uploads/2009/04/04_16_09_the_rolly_munro_articulated_hollower_01.jpg)](https://www.woodworkersguide.com/2009/04/16/the- rolly-munro-articulated-hollower/)
It is basically long handle, hollow, in which slides a very stiff bar allowing to reach the bottom of a deep vessel, and supporting a great cantilever beyond the tool rest. It also brings inertia in order to absorb the vibrations.
Contrary to the Munro, I preferred using a square section bar, in order to apply better pressure onto the tool rest, preventing the cutting tip to be caught by the rotating work piece.

The aim of this type of jig is to hold the workpiece vertically in order to cut the sides of the tenon with the table saw blade. For that purpose, a wide variety of models can be found, often quite sophisticated, featuring a side slide with setup and stop mechanisms, like Mathias Wandel’s model for instance.

Here is a couple of pens I made this week end. This time, I made roller-ball pens, using a standard “Stabilo” brand refill.
As usual, these pens are “kitless”, that is to say pens made without using any commercial mechanism.
Mostly, I make mechanical pencils, but this time, I have imagined a mechanism for ink pen, with a retractable tip.
The principle is similar to the one of a rifle breech, you have to push down the piston and then rotate to lock it in place.

Engraver’s bowl vise Here is a tool that can appear to look somewhat strange, it is a vise which aims at fixing the work-piece a metal engraver is working on.
I’ve been inspired for this tool by Jean Santos, French author of the site Gravures et Couteaux . He explains that, back to the 18th century, this tool was made with a cannonball, cut in two pieces. The hemispherical shape actually serves to tilt the vise under whatever necessary angle, in order for the craftsman to work as comfortable as possible.

Cordless drill made CORDED I don’t know if you are like me, but each time I need to use a cordless tool, it is always exactly when its batteries are dead flat… and I only have to wait for at least one hour to be able to use it again.
But, personally, I rarely schedule in my agenda the use of my tools, and thus, I make very little use of my cordless drill, for that reason.

This hammer is very specific, it is designed for metal engraving, for the work with chisels.
I have felt attracted by the Engraving craftsmanship for a while now, but that requires a lot of learning. I start by making my tools.
For those interested in engraving, I recommend the excellent site “Gravures et Couteaux”, from Jean Santos (in French).
The head, made of turned steel, only weighs 80g. The face is slightly rounded and large enough to offer a good hitting surface area for the chisel.

Another hammer, this time with a brass head.
This kind of hammer, small size (the head weighs 125g), is suitable for precise works like setting up a plane, or in luthiery, for knocking off a nut for instance.
The handle is made out of oiled ash, it is 25cm long. The head face is slightly rounded.

This tool goes back to the golden age of violin making in Cremona, and could be found in Stradivari’s shop. It is very accurate, far better than the common way used nowadays which is to use the drill press …
It is a punch with a hardened steel point, that is intended to be used after roughing out, to mark the wood to the desired thickness, in order to guide the planing and scraping to final thickness.

A carving platform Here is a platform that is used for holding a wood piece of any shape on the bench, in order to work on it, under any angle.
This platform was initially planned for wood carving, but it can be useful for many other activities, like planing, sanding, etc …
This version was inspired by a commercial design that can be (with difficulty) found. I show here a way to make one yourself, and also the way I have personally chosen to hold it on the bench.

The inlay shapes are cut from a printout of the plan. They are glued onto MOP pieces, which are glued on to 3mm plywood.
I use a half of the plan to locate the pieces on the fretboard, but I use the true piece to scribe the contour on the wood.
Rather than a simple stroker, I prefer to colour in with a graphite pencil.

gallery Bari Mando - Truss Rod Welcome to the gallery Bari Mando - Truss Rod.
It is a single action truss rod, that only pulls. The tension will tend to straighten the rod and to pull the neck backward. It is the reason why the truss rod is installed in a curved bottom slot.
My technique is to use two shaped rails to support the router sole, which thickness will follow the shape of the bottom of the slot.

The blade is made out of a carbon steel jigsaw blade ground in the shape of a hook and has the same width as the purfling (1.3mm). The sharperning is finished on a stone.
The handle is made out of a section of round ash, with a groove cut at the tip on the bandsaw.

Toothed blades for finger planes Highly figured woods like curly maple or some burled woods are very difficult to work.
The grain direction always changes, and planing such wood often leads to some tearing out.
For a roughing work, like we always do for the curly maple violin backs, after the gouging, we can use some plane blades that have tooth which prevent the production of a long and wide chip.

Thumb planes (finger planes) My personal build of thumb planes.
Funny enough, thumb plane translates “rabeau noisette” in French, which means hazelnut plane.
They are simply made from a tutorial I found here on the Web.
The first ones, I did them using the hard wood I had : chestnut tree, but turned out to be too soft.
For the second attempt, I found in an antique shop an old wooden planer, made out of sorb tree (I dont know if that translation is good, it’s “cormier” in french), that red , very hard wood.

A two-handed gouge For rough carving the top or back of a violin, or any other archtop instrument like the mandolin or jazz guitar, there are several possible methods. The fans of power tools may use a rooter to do so, but the true amateur of the “wood feeling” will by far prefer to use the gouge.
The quantity of wood to remove can be quite big and you need for that a tool with good output.

Purfling cutter The purfling cutter or scriber is a tool that allows scoring or cutting the thin groove that will fit the purfling on a top or back of a violin, as well as on the edge of top, back and sides of string instruments like the guitar or the mandolin. The tool allows scribing this groove parallel to the edge of the top or back.
Here is my personal version of the purfling cutter, I made it, trying to combine the pleasant and the useful, using not only metal, but also bone and rosewood.

Here is the problem, worms have gnawn the bottom of the leg.
The rest of the leg can be salvaged.
I will use this spare piece of the same wood (cherrywood), taken from a discarded bed, and will turn another bottom part of the leg.
I will have to put the leg on the lathe and will have to work the end on the tailstock side; I will have to use my homemade steady rest.

Chalumeau in key of D The “chalumeau” is a primitive form of the clarinet, which use is dated back to the middle age.
Since the barroco period, it is more particularly related to a single reed instrument.
It is only from the 17th century that Johann Denner added a bell and some keys to extend its scale and thus giving birth to the clarinet.

Diatonic Clarinet in the key of G The diatonic clarinet is an instrument that was inspired by the baroque clarinets, having a reduced number of keys. The diatonic version is relatively simplified in the sens that the covered scale is not chromatic. The range is quite reduced also, this instrument can not jump to the upper octave.
This simple instrument is a prototype I have done from beech wood. My goal was to experiment and to set up a plan, it is indeed very difficult to get plans for wind instruments.

This can be connected to the real world, using a photography of a real object, that would have been imported in the software and scaled to real size first.
It can be very usefull for the luthier, in order to adjust the size of a sound-hole, for instance when it is not circular (oval or ff shape).

Controlling dimensions in Inkscape Inkscape is an excellent vector graphics software. I use it very often for the most artistic parts of my technical drawings, each time that I need to find the nice curve …
But at the end of the day, it is anyway necessary to master the dimensional aspect of the drawing, especially if you want to import it in Qcad for instance.
Now, Inkscape has a very irritating defect, precisely concerning dimensions.

Audacity is a software for recording, editing and mounting sounds.
It permits to do all kinds of operations on sound clips, its is easily operated, and it is well documented on the Web.
I very often use it, for my recordings, but also at the workshop, for sound analysing.
Indeed, one the features that is the most useful to me in Audacity, is the feature of spectral analysis, which permits to find, on a recorded sound (even very short) the fundamental and harmonic frequencies that compose it.

The reference A is adjustable.
Each frequency is associated with a wave length, which corresponds to the wave length propagated in the air. The sound speed in the air can be adjusted, because this one varies somewhat with the temperature, which makes the wave length vary, as one can see.
The note and octave can be directly entered or you can choose a reference note on a “standard” instrument in the choice list of instruments.

Inkscape also features some interresting functions like the calculation of a surface area closed by a path.
On the other hand , Inkscape is not a software for technical drawings, il does not have the expected dimensional rigour for a true CAD software.

Convert Inches into millimeters A very simple trick, but also very usefull : a pocket calculator, intended to convert currencies, can be easilly tranformed to convert inches into millimeters and vice versa.
I take a standard pocket calculator, like this Casio HL-820VER I have purchased for less than 3 euros.
You need to change the conversion rate to 0,03937 and you obtain a calculator that translates inches into millimeteres and millimeters into inches.

My thickness sander The thickness sander is one of the most usefull machine to the luthier. It is a drum sander, relatively powerfull, that allows to sand some thin pieces on the thickness, but on a large width.
The thickness sander allows to set thickness (about 2mm or so) to some instrument tops, fingferboards, bindings, backs and ribs.
We can find some comercial versions of this machine, but it is relatively simple to build one, that will be much more versatile than the commercial versions.

Silver soldering a bandsaw blade Very often, a bandsaw breakage is felt as a fate that inevitably leads to the replacement of the blade.
It is however so simple to solder it back, using silver brazing. It is actually extreamly tough, so that the next breakage will probably not happen at the solded joint, if the weld is properly done.
Soldering does not require much equipment. The blade is not very massive and does not need a big heating power for reaching a high temperature.

There is however an important risk to forget that the blade is released and a startup of the machine with the blade released can lead to damages to the wheel tires, or to the blade, and as a consequence can lead to compromise the user security.
Here is the solution I adopted for this issue :

The ebonization is obtained by chemical reaction between iron acetat and the natural tannins of the wood.

The first solution is to use commercial soft jaws, often magnetic and rubber coated to avoid injuring the wooden piece.

Use of the threading dial tool.
No serious document was existing, so I decided to gather all the necessary informations here, hop it could help someone else !
Just give me your feedback !

Here is a project I realised upon the request of my daughter who wanted a case for her Uke.
To be noticed that this uke is tuned in GDAE, my little daughter being actually learning the fiddle ….
I purchased this set of GDAE strings for Uke at “Juste cordes”.
I had to make a new nut because of too much buzzing, due to the important difference in diameter compared to the original strings …

Improvement of standard clamps into « Klemmsia like » clamps If you have like me series of cheap clamps, even they have been usefull for even heavy duty works, they are not very suitable for delicate work like instrument making.
I propose a litte tweak that can be done easily in serial work to make them proper for clamping delicate woods.
Here is the finished result :
An how to for making this (in french but with lots of pictures) is available in the dowloads section.

Restoration of an old mandolin History: This mandolin is signed : “Fratelli Umberto, Napoli”. Despite this signature, that appears to be unequivocal, this model was actually built by the house “Laberte-Humbert Frères” from Mirecourt, France, in the years 1910s. One can notice that “Umberto Fratelli” is simply the Italian translation of “Humbert Frères” (Humbert brothers).
Indeed, we can find a trace of this mandolin in the Laberte-Humbert catalog of 1912, that can be consulted on the fascinating site “Luthiers- Mirecourt”.

Here is an F5 mandolin I have finished during the Summer 2012.
It is built under the original model of Lloyd Loar, in the early 1920s, for the Gibson company in the US.
This kind of build, introduced by the Great American luthier, somewhat reconciles the traditional guitar type luthiery with the one of the violin makers :
carved and arched top and back f shaped soundholes A couple of tuning bars, similar to the bass bar from the violin This build is quite similar as the Jazz archtop guitars, to a lower dimensional scale, but the technical difficulty is not lowered, see it is increased because of the small dimensions of some parts.
